Between Dreams with Gaëlle Elma

When I first came across Gaëlle Elma’s dreamy work, the reaction was completely visceral. Gaëlle’s work navigates Black and brown bodies with a keen eye for intimacy that transcends sexuality. Her images are the spaces between dreams, framed in a womb and laced in the fog you feel in the first few moments when you wake.

In her artist statement she writes: “Not only do I see life and those around me through little frames, my practice has put the way I see myself as a person and others into perspective.”

An Ode to Sisterhood.

Themes of sisterhood, nature and sexuality flow throughout the course of her work. She is insistent that Black bodies should be documented by Black eyes and voices, and explores the very depths of emotions and her own desires by viewing intertwining bodies.

“It enables me to see the subtle perfection of everyday life,” Elma says, “It has also helped me surpass personal biases by meeting and creating with amazing and unforgettable human beings.  They have taken me on a journey which is surprising and fulfilling.”
