Building Black Owned Institutions Is More Important Than "Diversity & Inclusion"

Building Black Owned Institutions Is More Important Than "Diversity & Inclusion"

Ownership over representation.

The #voguechallenge went viral and highlighted the hundred-year history of poor representation of Black beauty and Black creatives. It also illustrates a problematic pattern of rejection and longing in Black people that is born out of esteem-crushing oppression and negative media representation.

What if we fought as hard to build up Black-owned institutions that share our values, as we do begging to be included in places where we are clearly not appreciated? Since 1892 they’ve hired one Black creative to shoot a cover. To put their logo over your beautiful faces in this hour is to fall deeper into an unrequited love. Fuck Vogue Magazine. #voguechallenge
