Viola Davis' Emmy Speech + Redefining Beauty

Viola Davis' Emmy Speech + Redefining Beauty

"The only thing that separates women of color from anyone else is opportunity.
You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there. So here’s to all the writers, the awesome . . . people who have redefined what it means to be beautiful, to be sexy, to be a leading woman, to be black."

Viola Davis' victory speech at the Emmys Sunday evening was a was a poignant reminder that now is our time. Viola Davis' speech was not only a signifier of the power we wield as black women of influence, it also served as a wake up call.

If we want to see ourselves on TV, we have to be willing to create the shows. If we want to be represented on the big screen, we have to keep writing and producing and directing. If we want to see our stories properly represented in print, we have to be bold enough to create the publications.

CRWN's pillars are Sisterhood, Authenticity, Self Love and Knowledge of Self. We are creating a platform in which our true stories can be told — in which we, too, can redefine what it means "to be beautiful, to be sexy, to be a leading woman, to be black."

Whether your eye is on the big screen, the C-suite, your own business, the PTA or the cover of a magazine; our time is now. Let's keep building together.
